ontrary to popular belief, a “Demajen” is not a bird, a subtle twist on demagogue, or any of the other things Google used to suggest to me when I first typed the pseudonym into its handy search engine (this was way before I had one of those ‘internet presence’ things They tell you to get as an artist and writer and avoid like the plague as a teacher!)
I… *ahem*… acquired the name Demajen way back in the late 90s when, as a fifteen-sixteen year old geek, I was very into what was then the 2.5 edition of the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons roleplaying game. I needed a surname for a character, so I nicked the name ‘Demajen’ from the back of the “Black Crypt” computer game manual. Technically, therefore, Raven Software came up with the name first: the “Ring of Demajen” was a magical item needed to dispel a trap in one of the later levels of the game. I have no idea where they got the name from, but it’s mine now. Mine! ALL MINE!
I’ve been using the name for about fifteen years now (by which you can work out that I am, indeed, around thirty years of age!) and have it linked to most of my artistic and gaming endeavors. It has been used for just about every RPG or MMO character I’ve played in that time too.
If you see a Demajen on the internet, chances are it’s me. For better or worse…
